How to submit your log

It is strongly preferred that contest logs are submitted electronically. Whilst this does provide some reduction in workload for the contest managers more importantly it avoids the difficulties encountered in interpreting handwriting as well as any delays in transmission. If you are not able to submit electronically then hand written logs will be accepted on the official logsheet.

The deadline for log submission is Friday 20th March 2020.

Paper logs

Operators may choose to make use of the paper log during the contest and then enter the details electronically for submission. For those who wish to submit paper logs they should be sent to:

Ferry Contest
Waverley Amateur Radio Society
PO Box 634
Rose Bay NSW 2029

or scanned and submitted to the ferry contest email address (ferrycontest@gmail.com).

Electronic logs

An Excel spreadsheet template is included which can be used to produce the required comma delimited file.

Ferry Contest Log Simple

When using the template, the combination of your contact email address and callsign from the log file will be used to uniquely identify you. Other identifying details are not necessary.

The body of the email may contain whatever commentary you wish, however, as the logging system will be largely automated, if you would like to provide feedback regarding the contest then a separate email directed to one or all of the contest managers on their email addresses published on the main contest page would be preferable – and appreciated!

If producing your own spreadsheet or table, columns should show:

  1. Time (local)
  2. Contact callsign
  3. Mode: Simplex, Duplex or Eyeball
  4. Exchange Sent Serial
  5. Exchange Sent Location
  6. Exchange Received Serial
  7. Exchange Received Location
  8. Comment

It is important that the location and mode abbreviations are entered correctly. These are shown on the official log sheet and can also be found on the Contest Rules page.
An example log would look like this:

Time Contact Mode Sent Serial Sent Location Received Serial Received Location Comment
10:17 VK2XRH S 001 CQ 001 MY Rob
10:18 VK2GZ D 002 CQ 003 MY Laurie
10:15 VK2RM D 003 F3 006 MY Andy
10:45 VK2BV E 004 RB 027 RB Club
11:03 VK2XRH S 005 F7 031 F1 Rob
11:15 VK2ABC E 006 F7 017 F7

Time should be entered in 24 hour format and for Sydney (EST) local time. The use of a colon is optional. Do not enter a date.

The mode is either (S) simplex, (D) duplex or (E) eyeball. There is no need to specify modulation or band.

Exchanges consist of a combination of a sequential 3 digit number followed by a one or two letter location code.

The Comment field is optional.

Electronic logs should be saved in comma delimited file format (*.CSV) which is readily generated from a number of spreadsheet programs or via a text editor for those who prefer the direct method. The first line should contain the column names as shown above and will be skipped over during the automated import process.

Log files should be named with the participant’s callsign followed by a full stop and the csv file extension, for example, VK2FERI.csv.

All electronic logs should be emailed to ferrycontest@gmail.com.
